About

Church Alley is a public footpath in Broad Green, Croydon. It runs from Handcroft Road to Mitcham Road, between Bishops Road and Addington Road on one side and Dennett Road on the other.

Friends of Church Alley was a charitable organisation set up in 2011 in support of this alley and the area surrounding it. The organisation was active for seven years, until 2018.

Its objects were:
~  To promote the protection, conservation and improvement of Church Alley and the area surrounding it for the benefit of the public
~ To advance the education of the public a) in the conservation, protection and improvement of the physical and natural environment both generally and particularly as relevant to Church Alley and the area surrounding it and b) in the history of Church Alley and the area surrounding it.

Conservation activities included litter picking sessions in Church Alley and in the surrounding area, plus workshops to raise awareness of green issues. We also ran a local history project “Documenting Broad Green and Church Alley”, researching the history of the area and people’s memories of it. The results were displayed in a series of exhibitions held in local libraries, schools and voluntary organisations.

Membership was open to anyone who lives or works in the area, or who is interested in Church Alley or in supporting it – £2 annually per household.

Friends of Church Alley was a member of BTCV, the Association of Croydon Conservation Societies (ACCS) and of the Croydon Natural History and Scientific Society (CNHSS).
